Tottenville is located at the very southernmost tip of Staten Island. The South Shore neighborhood is rich with Victorian architecture, much of which is situated on Tottenville's tree-lined streets, and because of its proximity to the Outerbridge Crossing and New Jersey, the neighborhood is ideal for those who commute. Similar to many towns bordering Tottenville, the community was once home to Native Americans, and there's a large Native American burial ground in Conference House Park. The Conference House itself was built in the late 17th-century and was the site of the Staten Island Peace Conference in 1776, a conference that was instrumental in ending the Revolutionary War. Over the centuries, Tottenville has been a factory and shipyard town, a hub for oystering, and these day, a popular residential suburb. Most of Tottenville's businesses are located along Amboy Road, Ellis Street, and Main Street near the Tottenville train station. The neighborhood consists of two large park areas, Long Pond Park and Butler Manor Woods, two examples of pristine nature still untouched in the boroughs. There are also many historical sites in Tottenville, including the Conference House, the Tottenville branch of the New York Public Library, the parsonage at the Bethel Methodist Church, the Old Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne, and a number of private residences. Several public and private schools serve the neighborhood.

The Tottenville train station is located in the northwest corner of the neighborhood on at the end of Bentley Street. It provides an easy way to get to various points across the island, including the St. George ferry terminal on the other side of the island. Drivers are within a stone's throw from the Outerbridge Crossing to New Jersey, and the West Shore Expressway and Veterans Parkway are also nearby. Local and express buses serve the neighborhood on Amboy Road and Hylan Boulevard.
