One of Staten Island's oldest neighborhoods, New Springville is situated near the center of the island, surrounded by other Heartland neighborhoods such as Heartland Village, Latourette, Great Kills, Bulls Head, and Manor Heights. New Springville resembles an island adrift in a sea of green, thanks to the fact that multiple parks exist all around the neighborhood, making it an excellent location for those who appreciate the convenience of its centralized location as well as its connection to nature. New Springville was established in the late 17th century. Once a rural swath of land fed by fresh water springs (hence its name), New Springville remained that way well into the 1960s when retail stores began to spring up all over the neighborhood. In 1973, the Staten Island Mall was built, propelling New Springville into a commercial and retail hub. New Springville's reputation as a center of commerce in Staten Island is well-earned: There's no shortage of places to shop, dine, and find what you need around the neighborhood. Furthermore, the Staten Island Mall is nearby in Heartland Village, so residents need not travel far to enjoy all the amenities the area has to offer. You're never far from the beauty of nature in New Springville. Parks like Willowbrook, the Greenbelt Nature Center, Latourette Park, Fresh Kills, and the William T. Davis Wildlife Center are just minutes from the center of the neighborhood. New Springville is close to a number of public and private schools for K-12 students, as well as institutes of higher learning, such as Wagner College, St. John's University, and the College of Staten Island.
Opportunities to utilize public transportation are abundant in New Springville, with six city bus routes making stops all throughout the neighborhood, including several express buses off-island to Brooklyn and Manhattan. Those who prefer to commute by car can either head north on Richmond Avenue or take Travis Avenue to the West Shore Expressway in order to reach the Staten Island Expressway. Both the Bayonne Bridge and the Goethals Bridge are less than five miles north of New Springville. The nearest train station is in New Dorp approximately three miles away.
